Who we are
Talking Plants is a social evening for people who love plants, seeded in Sheffield, with roots across the North.
Hosted in The Mowbray, Talking Plants invites speakers from all avenues of the plant world to speak about their work or interests. Each evening if followed up by a plant ident, the winner is rewarded with the plants!
Talking Plants was started in 2022 by Will, Amy, and Katy. Eager to share plant knowledge through talks, workshops, trips, swaps, idents, and of course drinks! Since then numerous talks have been hosted, plants shared, and great conversations started.

Will Tomson
FOUNDER
A life long interest in the natural world led me to study Ecology at university, after which I pursued work in conservation and then in the arts, working at a charity with disadvantaged youths to improve urban spaces through gardens and art installations. It was here that I discovered garden design as the perfect combination of blending creativity and the environment.
When funding dried up for the charitable role, I returned to study at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh and obtained a HND in Horticulture and Plantsmanship. During this time I worked with a design and build company with a similar ecological ethos, constructing gardens, before starting up my own business in Edinburgh.
In 2018, I was accepted on the TRIAD Great Gardens of the World fellowship program, which involved working in Japan, America and the UK, gaining valuable practical experience and a huge amount of horticultural and design inspiration (some of which is recorded here).
On returning to England in 2019, I worked with renowned garden designer Chris Beardshaw at his studio, after helping plant his Chelsea Gold medal garden, before returning to my home town of Sheffield to restart Creative Cultivation.

As Cultural Gardener, Katy has cared for The Hepworth Wakefield Garden in West Yorkshire, UK, since its creation in 2019, together with a small and dedicated team of local volunteers. It is a much-needed urban oasis for people local to the gallery. Katy is responsible for the day-to-day management of the planting and liaises with learning and events teams to develop creative activities connected to the garden.
Katy initially studied Fine Art before retraining in horticulture. She has previously worked in beautiful gardens across the UK and in the USA, including Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh at Logan: Dumfries & Galloway, Tresco Abbey: Isles of Scilly and Longwood Gardens: Pennsylvania, USA.
